Horse Vaulting Question.....?
Okay, while it looks really cool, I'm not the one interested in equestrian vaulting, its my cousin. We have been riding together for a year and a half to two years and we both show competitively and we know horses really well. She is 15(almost 16) and asked me if I thought she was too old to take up equestrian vaulting. I don't think so but then again I don't know much about the sport. She wants to become competitive eventually (not WEG competitive or anything, but at least regionally and go from there). I know that she is really athletic and from what I've seen she picks things up fast and is careful but pretty fearless. If it maters I think she is about 5'3'' and maybe 98 lbs. Oh and besides a few years of different kinds of dance here and there (which she had a skill for) I don't think she has gymnastics training. So...would you say she's too old, too inexperienced as far as the gymnastics part goes, too anything to start vaulting?|||I used to be a competitive vaulter regionally. I don't think your cousin is too old to start. I started when I was around 11 and had no background in gymnastics or dance. It helps to have a background with horses, gymnastics and dance but it's not neccessary.|||Of course not! I totally encourage her to look up a team close by and give it a try (go to www.americanvaulting.org). Vaulting is an absolutely AMAZING sport and one of the closest and most caring communities out there. Some vaulters start when they are little, but others don't start until they are in high school, college, or even as adults. If she likes dance and horses, vaulting is a perfect combination!|||She should contact the nearest vaulting club and ask. In vaulting, there are some riders who don't do as many gymnastics type moves, but are sort of on the horse as a base for someone else to do the tricks from. Maybe she could qualify for one of those positions without previous gymnastics or vaulting training, but I'm not sure.|||You're never too old to start vaulting! I started at age 28 and I'm mad at myself that I didn't start sooner! A good vaulting coach takes the skills you have and lets you build on them and will work on areas that will help you become a better vaulter whether it is strength, coordination, flexibility or stamina.|||I coach a small vaulting team. People can start at any age and become competitive from very young to adults. Starting in high school with a background in riding and dance should give her a strong foundation. Go to www.americanvaulting.org to look up clubs near you or contact them about starting one in your area.|||Definitely not too old for vaulting :) Vaulting is a unique and wonderful sport that can be fun and rewarding for people with a variety of skills or abilities. And we are a small and welcoming equestrian community. I agree she should contact a local vaulting club and give it a try.
